Airsoft masks are critically important to protect your face. Which mask is the best one for you?
If you’re into military simulations and replica guns, you’ll love airsoft. It’s a competitive shooting game similar to paintball, minus of course, the paint. If you’re willing to try the sport, it’s highly recommended you look into the best airsoft masks.
Airsoft is fun and can also be an excellent form of exercise. However, it can also be dangerous, so safety equipment is recommended and even required at times. Eye protection should be your number one consideration when shopping for a mask.
Masks, vests and other pieces of protective gear will help keep you safe during games both big and small. For this reason, it’s something you should not take lightly. It’s all fun and games until someone gets hurt.
The dangers of airsoft (hint: wear a mask!)
The game is played with replica guns that work on batteries, gas or are spring-loaded. These guns fire BBs at different speed and distance, so every gun is also quite different. Check out our other articles on this site to learn more about the different gun types.
These BBs cannot go through a person’s skin so it’s unlikely that you can seriously hurt someone if you shoot them in hand for example. However, it’s a whole another story if you accidentally shoot in the face. The number one reason to wear an airsoft mask is for eye protection!
Eyes are definitely the most vulnerable part on the face, and a BB can cause severe damage if you shoot at them. Still, getting one on your neck or forehead would also be quite uncomfortable.
For this reason you should opt for a face mask the same day you get yourself an airsoft gun. Luckily, there are many different models on the market (half face mask/full face mask), so you don’t actually have to cover your entire face, although it is recommended.
What is an airsoft mask?
In the simplest words, an airsoft mask designed to protect your face from airsoft pellets.
Though BBs won’t put you in any real danger or cause severe head trauma, they can still damage soft parts of your face, especially your eyes. We’ve already mentioned eye protection, but it bears repeating – wear a mask at all times!
More so, you can even end up with a scar if a BB hits you in the cheek, neck or forehead. There are different models to choose from depending on your needs and preferences, as you’ll see when we cover full face protection as well as what a half face mask is.
If you want to avoid a chipped tooth, potential scarring, or worse, we recommend you get yourself an airsoft mask. There are dozens of airsoft masks on the market but we’ll narrow them down to five we like the best.
Airsoft mask buying guide
If you’re buying one for the first time, you’ve probably noticed the many varieties on the market. Some are big and cover the entire face (full face) while others are small and look a lot like swimming goggles. (half face) The amount of face protection you need is an individual choice, but as the saying goes, “better safe than sorry.”
Buying airsoft guns and other equipment is often overwhelming for beginners. Not only because there are so many models to choose from, but most people struggle because of not knowing what to look for.
It’s more than just picking the mask you like the best. Some states and airsoft fields have regulations of their own that you have to follow in order to play. Continue reading to learn about these masks, what different models exist, and what you should pay attention when buying an airsoft mask. Use your best judgement when it comes to your safety, do not put yourself or others at risk.
Requirements and regulations
The first thing you want to do is check the laws and regulations in your country as well as the particular field where you’re playing.
Some fields require you to wear a mask though you can choose which type while others forbid a certain kind altogether. Some don’t pressure you into wearing one at all.
Nonetheless, it is best to check on this before you actually choose an airsoft mask. State regulations also vary so in California you have to wear a full face mask if you’re playing on a public field.
Full face vs half face airsoft masks
The next comes choosing between a full face mask or half face mask. In general, it’s up to you to determine based on your preferences and needs. It’s hard to tell which type is better since they both protect the face just fine. The best recommendation we can give is to experiment and find what works for you.
Half face masks are usually cheaper and more adjustable. You can also use them for a few more things other than airsoft and paintball, which is a plus. They are lightweight and easy to put on and take off.
The only drawback to half face masks is the fact that some areas of your face will remain exposed. Most often it’s your cheeks, the back of your head and probably forehead that stays out of the masks.
Full face masks are large, robust and also a bit more expensive. They do however offer better protection of your entire face, so no areas are left exposed. The full face protection they provide have made them more popular. The also don’t fog as easily.
The two most commonly found materials are metal mesh and plastic. Decorative masks are usually made of plastic, and there’s a wide range of models to choose from.
You can select anything from Superman, Batmen, and Deadpool, Deathstroke, Predator and all sorts of of different skull masks. They’re all made of plastic and are incredibly durable. This type of airsoft mask can take a shot from any gun without cracking.
The disadvantage of a plastic airsoft mask would have to be the breathability level. Most of these are designed to look good more than to be effective and breathable. Plastic masks almost always fog which is another problem on its own.
Metal/steel mesh is more lightweight and breathable than plastic. In most cases, you can also bend the wire mesh and adjust it to the contours of your face.
The main setback of these is that the material can actually bend or break with point-blank shots. Also, steel mesh isn’t so easy to look through, and it will take you some time to get used to that. Goggles are far better in terms of visibility but only if they aren’t fogging.
We’ve mentioned fogging as one of the most annoying things that can happen when you’re wearing an airsoft mask. Not only some masks can cause your face to sweat, but they can actually also reduce the air ventilation.
For this reason your best bet is to only opt for masks that have enough holes to allow air to circulate. Keep in mind you’ll probably run, jump and sprint so you’ll need that much more air.
While most manufacturers claim their airsoft masks are anti-fog, it’s often just a marketing trick they use. One way to combat fogging is to use an anti-fog spray on your mask. Invest in a genuinely anti-fog mask if possible as it will help your game and allow you to enjoy it fully. See if your mask comes with spray or any other accessories.
There’s no such thing as a universal size for airsoft masks. Some are adjustable, but that’s as far as brands go with this matter.
Once you pick the mask you like, check if it fits your measurements just right. Some brands provide sizing charts, but it’s mostly up to you to check if it will fit you snuggly and comfortably. Take a few minutes to adjust the elastic straps, move the wire mesh to a comfortable position, and be sure that you’re never sacrificing eye protection for looks. It isn’t a fashion contest out there! Also test how the mask comes off and on – you might take need to take restroom or food breaks.
A mask that doesn’t fit well is a nightmare to work with. If it’s too small, your experience is bound to be uncomfortable, and you’ll definitely have marks on your skin where the mask sat.
If it’s too big, it will keep falling off your head causing you to always readjust it if not give up on it altogether.
Either way, a good fit is a must if you want to get the best of your mask and enjoy the game as you should.
What are airsoft masks made of?
Typically airsoft masks are made of plastic, metal or polycarbonate.
It depends on the type of mask but that’s what they usually make them from. The half masks are usually a mixture of reinforced plastic and steel mesh (the ones that just cover your mouth).
Whatever they’re made from, it’s almost always strong enough to deflect a BB pellet. Some masks that are made from slightly cheaper plastic can crack if you fire at the visor point blank range, but that’s very unlikely. Most of them deflect even the strongest of shots from a sniper.
What’s the best airsoft mask for aiming?
The best mask for aiming is one of the Dye I5s.
It’s a full face mask that protects your face from all angles, but more importantly, you can aim easily with it, and wear glasses while you’re using it.
Without a doubt the biggest reason airsofters have for not wearing the right face protection during a game is they want to be able to see and aim better. Often they’ll risk getting injured just to be able to aim and see better, so it’s a big deal for them. Not the best idea if you ask us.
This mask gives you a great amount of flexibility. You can see all around you, and it’s fully protecting your face. It’s also easy to wear your own glasses underneath which is hard in other masks.

It’s a one-piece that protects your entire face, eyes and mouth included. It also covers your ears if that’s something you prefer. Keep in mind, however, that this can actually affect how well you can hear on the battlefield.
Though your entire face is covered, the mask doesn’t cover the back of your head nor the top. Also, you should be able to fit your glasses under there if you wear any. It remains comfortable and well fitted.
It’s made of highly durable plastic so it’s unlikely that it could break if someone shot at you. As far as fogging goes, it might happen though we found no such complaints.
The mask features small holes for air circulation which might not be enough if you tend to breathe heavily.

This one is lightweight and provides great air circulation even when you run and sprint. It has adjustable straps, so the mask fits most people fairly well. The dual elastic head straps allow the best fit but make sure to check if the measurements aren’t too big or too small for you.
